Millet and Sorgo in the Dairy Cattle Rations

Maria Yaroshko

The productivity of milking herd depends not only on the sufficient amount of feed, but also on its quality, balance and nutrition qualities. Experts in crop farming and cattle breeding are in constant searching of optimal solutions.

Not long ago experts in crop farming considered straw, alfalfa and clover hay, corn and grain silage as the main ingredients in rations for milking cows. Currently, together with agro-climatic conditions getting worse, it’s becoming harder to gather in heavy and steady yield of corn and other traditional crops. So, livestock products cost is raising, because its main element is forage expenses. Let’s take corn as an example. It’s the main crop in the rations for cows and it has changed a lot. Corn seeds are expensive, its pitch rate is pretty high, weed and pest killers and fertilizer are not cheap consequently etc. That’s why we have to look for other basic crops, which would be cheaper and effective in feeding. Besides, they should meet animal’s nutritious needs, consume well by the representatives of different technological groups, and, if possible, used as raw material for foodstuffs. Such crops are supposed to be cheap in production, grow in required amounts and terms, irrespective to weather conditions.
