Anti- ketosis program

Oleksandr Ovcharenko, Executive of Veterinary and Practical Consulting Project, a nutritionist of “Dominanta Ukraine”

Ketosis in dairy cows is a disease characterized by impaired carbohydrate, fat, protein, energy and mineral metabolism. It is accompanied by accumulation of ketone bodies in the animal’s body, degenerative changes in the liver, heart, kidney, ovary, thyroid and parathyroid glands and pituitary adrenal system, which causes big losses. How to diagnose the problem and how to act in order to prevent disease or alleviate it? Read more about in the article.

Clinical Signs

It should be noted that ketone bodies are formed in the process as impaired and normal metabolism. They are common metabolites that the body uses as an energy material. Ketone bodies play an important role in maintaining energy balance. They are suppliers of energy to the muscles, kidneys and act as components of a regulatory feedback mechanism, preventing excessive mobilization of fatty acids from fat "depot". Ketone bodies are formed in the liver. In the serum of healthy animals ketone bodies are found in small concentrations — 0.2-0.8 mmol/l. But when the animal suffers from ketosis, the concentration of ketone bodies can be increased tenfold.

Ketosis is a signal of deterioration in the dairy herd. The disease is usually characterized by anorexia, depression, decreased productivity, and inhibition of reproductive functions of animals. Rarely, it occurs in cattle in late gestation, at which time it resembles pregnancy toxemia of ewes. In addition to inappetence, signs of nervous dysfunction, including pica, abnormal licking, incoordination and abnormal gait, bellowing, and aggression are occasionally seen. Even if the disease runs in the subclinical level, it increases the risk of several metabolic and reproductive disorders that further reduce the profitability of the company through additional costs.
