Brewer’s Grain in Cattle Diets

Yurii Sivov, UDA CC Consultant

By-products of the food industry are used for cattle feeding to cut the cost of cattle diets and to increase their nutritional value. Some of these products are the source of non-digestible protein. The others might be used instead of forage. Using them we may increase fiber level in feeds. Considering a unique nutrient content of food industry by-products, especially brewer’s grains, they are used as ingredients for the balanced ration.

Brewing is associated with the production of many kinds of by-products — wet or dried brewer’s grains, dry brewer’s yeast etc. In most cases brewer’s grains are used. They are fed to ruminants and nonruminants (mainly dried brewer’s grains). Brewer’s grains are usually barley grains. Depending on the producer corn, wheat or rice may be used. Brewer’s grains are high in protein (25-30% of DM) and in digestible fiber. At the same time they contain small amounts of calcium and potassium. That’s why while feeding brewer’s grains it is recommended to add mineral supplements.
