Dry period

February 28-29, at V Ukrainian Dairy Congress the participants were able to visit our farm — «Vitchyzna» in Sumy. Then people asked a lot of questions about ketosis, retention of placenta, paresis, mastitis, fatty liver syndrome. That's what made me write this article and share our experience in one of the most important stages in the life of every cow — dry period.

If we compare the periods of the life of cows with new home construction stages, the dry period is, without exaggeration, building the foundation for new high yields and production of healthy young animals. We have to do the right drying, properly house and feed her, to do preventive measures and vaccination. Underestimation of the main tasks and any error can cause a number of diseases, reduction of performance or even loss of animals.

The best time for drying cows is 60 days before calving. However, this figure in different conditions can vary from 50 to 70 days. It is the time to cows’ organism to recover and relax from the intensive milking and digestion of the diet with high protein content.

Particular importance during this period is recovery of the udder. This is the key to health and increase productivity during the next lactation. I want to draw attention to the fact that the dry period can not be less than 50 days, you have to ensure the absence of antibiotic residues in milk of fresh cows.

You also need to keep careful records of information on reproduction and on the basis of this plan and organize work.
