Horizontal and vertical feedmixers: which to prefer?

Vladimir Alekseychuk, director of development and sales in CIS LLC «Zapahromash»

Every year scientists and experts sought effective ways to increase milk production of cows. One of the most important innovations was the introduction of full mixed ration (FMR) for feeding cattle.

Technology of FMR first began to be used in North America. As a result of research, scientists have found that animals with identical milk production under the same conditions differently consume feed, which consists of the same components, but one animal were fed ration ingredients separately, and others — mixed. Cows ate better mixed feed and thus give more milk. Then found that for optimal digestion cutting length of roughage should be 5-6 cm.If fraction is longer, cow chews it longer and therefore wastes more energy. Smaller fraction leads to acidosis (souring rumen contents).

Researchers established that the use of full mixed ration improves dairy and beef cattle productivity by an average of 10-15% compared with a separate feed. In addition, the technology of FMR allows partly save the costs on expensive balancing supplements. The consumption of feed is almost absolute. Due to FMR total feed costs are reduced by 5-10%.

To implement the new technology of feeding mobile feedmixers capable to grind up roughage, roots, or tubers, and evenly mix the ingredients and distribute feedmix were needed. Manufacturers suggested to farmers horizontal and vertical feedmixers.
