Feeding Liquid Whey to Dairy Cattle
An inquiry of using liquid whey in feeding dairy herds has come to Consulting centre of Ukrainian Dairy Association from the specialists of one of its members — PJSC «Plemzavod ‘Stepnoi’». The consultants in close collaboration with American partners from the University of Wisconsin prepared an answer to a demand. Whereas some enterprises of the company have their own milk processing plants as well as its byproducts, and there are many such enterprises in Ukraine we decided to publish some information about using liquid whey in the magazine «Milk and Farm».
Liquid whey consists primarily of lactose, protein, minerals and water. Most liquid whey’s contain only 4 to 7% DM, but the solids fraction is relatively high in feeding value. Whey has a variable protein content ranging from 9% to 30% CP (DM basis), but most whey’s contain 11% to 13% CP (DM basis) and have an energy value close to ear corn. Some whey’s contain 7% to 8% fat, but most never go beyond 1% fat (DM basis). Liquid whey contains B-, C-, A- and E-group vitamins, nicotinic acid, choline and biotin, the minerals calcium and magnesium. It is strongly recommended to determine its nutritional composition before using.
