Vladimir Yaroshenko, a consultant of feed production, teacher of Uman National University of Horticulture

Natalia Bezpala, Head of the Laboratory «First of May» feed factory Ltd.

Soybean meal is popular in Ukraine protein component of animal feed, which is increasingly being used in diets for different animals. The benefits of this product are known almost to everyone who is engaged in livestock breeding, particularly in feed production. Let’s emphasize the fact that almost everyone who develops recipes for feed, buy the said component via an ideal combination of price and quality.

Equation with many unknowns

Cattle breeding is complex and specific job. First of all, because it combines the three cornerstones: people, animals and equipment. But there is another feature. It is multifactorial business, consisting of a considerable number of variables. Can we do the work of dairy farm, a complex and multifactoral production, transparent and manageable? About this is our conversation with Ivan Perov, manager of farm management systems company «DeLaval» (Russia).

Infertility of heifers:economic losses

Vladimir Malovanyy, veterinary «Henus Ukraine» Ltd. (Unit ABS Global in Ukraine)

Currently, Ukrainian milkmen are looking for cows and heifers to fill new and reconstructed farms both in Ukraine and abroad. All of them prefer animals from abroad. Why? They say that they have higher performance than local ones. Perhaps they are genetically better, but the most important thing is properly grown youngstock.

Completely different philosophy

Tatiana Antonenko, International Dairy Magazine

We’ve been living in a time that can be called «the period of the industrial provision of people with food.» On the one hand, it is clear that despite the international analysts of predicted food crisis it is an industrial approach that can solve the problem of lack of food. On the other hand — more powerful the propaganda becomes of consumption and, consequently, food production with as less interference of the same «industrialization» as during production and processing. It should be noted that a return to «pre-industrial» methods of cultivation and/or fattening of all that then becomes food the hottest is manifested in countries with high-tech agriculture and food industry.

Cheap and ... effective

In our magazine number 3 in June of 2012 we described Ltd. «Vitchyzna» in Sumy, and its owner and manager Sergei Chyzhyk. In particular, how in 2005 he bought neglected farm in the village of Shpotivka (Konotop district) where 300 cows were kept. In seven years new owner and his team have created at this place successful and modern farm, building the entire infrastructure from scratch. This year the magazine «Milk and Farm» again visited the farm in Shpotivtka to make sure that an efficient infrastructure can be created without the crazy investments, «cheap» does not mean «bad». It was the ideology which governed the «Vitchyzna» when building feedlots — grounds for keeping heifers.

Now’s the time for your summer cooling plan

Four times a year, Peter and Connie have a big team meeting with all of their other consultants. We found that their dairy fits into a pattern that we see throughout our practice. There are six months when milking cows in the Midwest are pretty good, November through April. Then there are the transition months, May and October, and the four summer months.

Feeding of dry cows and heifers

Pavlo Palamarchuk, Associate of Resource Center of Association of Milk Producers of Ukraine

Obtaining high yields, well developed offsprings, health and reproductive ability of cows — all this depends on the organization of feeding in the dry period. Despite the relatively short duration (45-60 days), dry period is very important.

The technology of full mixed ration

Victor Sych, Ph.D., director of «KUHN Ukraine»

As we promised in the previous article about choosing fodder, this time we’ll consider how to feed cattle with complete mixed ration (CMR), how to prepare and check the quality and its effect on milk and meat production.

The role of different kinds of fiber during the cattle feeding

Maria Yaroshko, MA MBA, Associate NimATs

Realization of potential productivity of ruminants is largely dependent on the creation of such feeding conditions that meet their physiological needs. The increase in feed quality is designed to increase the number and quality of the products (milk, meat) and reduce its cost.
