France ranks first among the countries of the EU beef production. It has the largest cattle population - 20.6 million heads. In this country the cattle breeding is involved in a wet medium mountain areas such as the Jura and the northern foothills of the Alps. These areas are favorable for the dairy production, giving France the opportunity to occupy the first places in the world for producing high quality cheese (Hryuper, Comté, Emmental) and butter. The most common dairy breed here is monbelyard.
