Precision livestock farming in Ukraine

Alena Antonova

Managing a farm, as well as any other production, is a difficult task. It requires constant careful recording and planning that take much time. To optimize management processes on dairy farms many modern tools have been developed, including automated software. They are integrated with the dairy equipment and are designed to make the work of the farmer as simple and efficient as possible.

Shredlage: What Does It Go With?

Olga Zarytska

Well-fed cattle give a lot of milk. That’s the reason why dairy producers pay so much attention to cows’ diets and balancing of ration ingredients. Forages take their rightfull place here, especially corn silage. Many trials on how the kernel breakage influences nutrition and digestibility of silage have been conducted for many years. Today no one doubts that we need to do it. Researchers have also observed the stover particle length. As a result, shredlage was invented. Nowadays it is generating a lot of interest among dairy and livestock producers and their nutritionists in Ukraine as well as abroad. Let’s acquaint with a new method closer.

09.01.2014 11:51:42

Viktoria Sova

This is the amount an average Ukrainian has added to his yearly portion of milk. This rise has appeared to be the first for the last couple of years. Ukrainian Dairy Association (UDA) also made efforts to obtain such results. How has it helped? What social projects and events has it taken part in? What were the first results? What is there in plans? Read all the answers below.

Milk Processing. Between Dairy Farm and Consumer

Tetiana Antonenko, International Dairy Magazine

It is logically to look round and make some conclusions at the end of the year. If you have a look at numbers, milk processing in Ukraine, in spite of being sensitive to changes, shows rather good results. At the same time, production and consumption statistics in some way reflects existing problems.

Brewer’s Grain in Cattle Diets

Yurii Sivov, UDA CC Consultant

By-products of the food industry are used for cattle feeding to cut the cost of cattle diets and to increase their nutritional value. Some of these products are the source of non-digestible protein. The others might be used instead of forage. Using them we may increase fiber level in feeds. Considering a unique nutrient content of food industry by-products, especially brewer’s grains, they are used as ingredients for the balanced ration.

The Role of Protected Fats in Dairy Cows' Ration

Maria Yaroshko, MBA

High-producing dairy cows are rather capricious to nutritive feeding, in particular they need to get required energy. Energy supply is of great importance at the end of dry period and in early lactation. First months after calving will determine the profitability of production.

Peculiarities of Preweaning Period

Sergii Fil, Chief of Animal Science Department

A lot of scientists have proved: the use of the best bull’s semen isn’t the primary prerequisite of the success. If animals with the best genetics are bred under the condition where production procedures are ignored, the potential of the genotype won’t realize. Besides, practice shows that following all the production requirements, even in case of not high-yielding cows, gives high production indices. Nowadays cattle breeders inseminate cows using semen of American or Canadian beef sires. In addition to that ‘a detail’ is left: to learn how to rear potentially high-yielding cows properly.

Anti- ketosis program

Oleksandr Ovcharenko, Executive of Veterinary and Practical Consulting Project, a nutritionist of “Dominanta Ukraine”

Ketosis in dairy cows is a disease characterized by impaired carbohydrate, fat, protein, energy and mineral metabolism. It is accompanied by accumulation of ketone bodies in the animal’s body, degenerative changes in the liver, heart, kidney, ovary, thyroid and parathyroid glands and pituitary adrenal system, which causes big losses. How to diagnose the problem and how to act in order to prevent disease or alleviate it? Read more about in the article.

Rape by-products in the feeding of dairy cattle

Maria Yaroshko, MBA Master

Protein components in a dairy cattle diet is the most expensive compared to all others. The purchase of forage rich in protein (such as soy bean meal or fodder yeast) takes the biggest share of the cost. That’s why farm owners are interested in replacing these ingredients with cheaper ones, which do not adversely affect the physiology of animals. An advantageous alternative to expensive protein components of the diet are rape by-products, including cattle cakes.
